Which Cabin Model Is Right for Your Rental?

Share:

I've never met an investor who wasn't looking for positive cash flow. But I've also noticed a gap between that desire and the know-how of picking the right cabin for the job.

Here's the thing: all four of our most popular models—the Northwood, the Cliff, the Vista, and the WanderHut—are built to the same standard. Every one is energy-efficient, four-season comfortable, and designed to help you offer guests an amazing experience they'll rave about in their reviews. So the question isn't "which cabin is best?" It's "which cabin is best for my property, my guests, and my goals?"

That's what this guide is for. We'll walk through what makes each model unique, then leave you with the questions worth asking before you commit. (And if you haven't already, grab our free guide, 5 Mistakes That Kill Cabin Profits, for a deeper dive into avoiding the pitfalls that keep investors up at night.)

Let's start with the foundation of any good decision: knowing your ideal guest.

Start With Your Guest, Not Your Gut

Perhaps the most common mistake we see investors make is choosing a cabin that inspires themselves—rather than a space fitted to the desires of the guests they're actually trying to attract. If your goal is a cabin for personal use with occasional rental income on the side, your own taste is a perfectly fine compass. But if your goal is strong, consistent cash flow, it's worth setting personal preference aside and asking a few honest questions first:

  • What's your local area best suited to? A romantic getaway? A wellness retreat? Family fun?
  • What amenities are nearby—hiking, water, restaurants, a walkable downtown?
  • Are your guests coming from the city or the country? Will they want something rustic, or something sleek and modern?
  • What do guests in your market complain about? What are they raving about?

Once you've got a feel for your ideal guest, the choice between our four models gets a lot easier. Here's how each one delivers on that promise.

The Northwood: The Luxury Showpiece

If your ideal guest is booking an anniversary trip, a honeymoon, or a "we just need to disconnect and reconnect" weekend, the Northwood is built for exactly that moment.

At 13'8" x 29", it's our most spacious couples' model, and it shows in the amenities: a king-sized bed, a ceramic tile shower, a large soaker tub, and an electric fireplace with a stone surround for those cozy, cold-weather stays. Skylights positioned above both the tub and the bed mean guests get natural light by day and stargazing views by night—the kind of detail that turns a good review into a five-star one.

The exterior pairs matte black corrugated steel with warm cedar accents, giving it a striking, modern-cabin look that photographs beautifully for listing photos. And under the hood, closed-cell spray foam insulation keeps the Northwood comfortable in every season, so you're not staring down a shuttered unit—and lost income—every winter.

Best for: Investors targeting the premium end of the couples' market, where guests expect (and will pay for) a true spa-like retreat.

The Cliff: The All-Around Couples Retreat

The Cliff shares a lot of DNA with the Northwood—king bed, tiled shower, soaker tub, fireplace, skylights, the same steel-and-cedar exterior—but wraps it into a slightly different package. With 339 square feet of interior living space plus an 8-foot covered porch, the Cliff gives guests a little more room to spread out and enjoy the outdoors without leaving home.

It's designed to sit comfortably, quite literally, into sloped or rocky terrain, and the covered porch adds a natural gathering spot for morning coffee or evening wine by the fire pit. A kitchenette with a two-burner induction cooktop and an oak bar means guests can prepare a simple meal without sacrificing the getaway feel.

Best for: Landowners with a scenic or elevated site who want the full luxury-couples package with more outdoor living space built in.

The Vista: The Modern Minimalist

Where the Northwood and Cliff lean warm and rustic-luxury, the Vista leans sleek and contemporary. At 11'6" x 23' (266 square feet), it's a more compact footprint, but it doesn't skimp on the details that make guests rave: a waterfall showerhead, granite countertops and backsplash, and a built-in king-sized bed with dimmable strip lighting along the headboard and frame.

The black-painted and ReadySeal-coated cypress siding gives the Vista a distinct, minimalist look that stands apart from our other models—a great option if your property (or your target guest) leans modern rather than traditional-cabin. And like every CabinPro model, it's outfitted with closed-cell spray foam insulation for genuine year-round comfort.

Best for: Investors marketing to design-forward guests who want a "boutique hotel in the woods" feel rather than a classic cabin aesthetic.

The WanderHut: The Efficient Micro-Suite

Not every guest is looking for a sprawling retreat—some just want a beautifully designed, fully stocked space to unplug. That's the WanderHut. At 12' x 16' with 168 square feet of interior space, it's our most compact model, but the striking A-frame architecture and floor-to-ceiling glass front make it feel far larger than its footprint suggests.

Inside, guests get a queen bed on a built-in birch platform, a kitchenette, and a workstation-style desk—handy for the "workation" crowd or guests using it as a home base for outdoor adventures. Two large skylights bring in natural light and, at night, unobstructed stargazing.

Where the WanderHut really shines is its flexibility. It's available on a Park Model RV chassis or in a modular format, depending on your local code requirements, and it offers optional add-ons: a cedar outdoor sauna with a Frost-Free outdoor shower, a deck extension, and a maintenance room with washer/dryer setup. That makes it an easy fit for wellness retreats, glamping sites, or any property looking to add a premium tier without the footprint of a full cabin. This cabin is also available with a full indoor bathroom and expanded kitchenette in the WanderHut Deluxe model.

Best for: Landowners with a smaller building footprint, or those looking to build out a multi-unit glamping site where efficiency and design both matter.

Questions to Ask Before You Decide

Once you've got a sense of which model matches your ideal guest, it's worth running through a few more practical questions—the kind that protect your ROI long after the delivery truck pulls away.

What's your realistic breakeven? Before falling in love with a model, know your fixed monthly loan payments, estimated utility costs, rental set-up costs, and per-stay expenses like cleaning and taxes. Compare those against a realistic nightly rate and occupancy for your market. Knowing your breakeven occupancy percentage is the difference between a rental that pays for itself and one that quietly drains your bank account.

Can your site handle winter? A cabin that sits empty—or costs a fortune to heat—for a quarter of the year is a cabin that's leaving money on the table. All CabinPro models come with closed-cell spray foam insulation for genuine four-season comfort, but it's still worth thinking through how your specific site (elevation, tree cover, sun exposure) will perform in the coldest months.

What's your footprint, and what does your site allow? The WanderHut's compact 12' x 16' size makes it a fit for tighter lots or multi-unit glamping layouts, while the Cliff's covered porch and the Northwood's larger interior need a bit more room to breathe. Local code and site access (can a delivery truck get close?) matter here too.

Are you drawn to rustic-luxury or modern-minimalist? The Northwood and Cliff lean warm, with cedar accents and a classic cabin-in-the-woods feel. The Vista leans sleek and contemporary. The WanderHut splits the difference with striking A-frame architecture. Your site's surroundings—and your target guest's taste—should guide this more than your own preference.

Do you want room to add on later? If you're eyeing a wellness angle, the WanderHut's optional sauna and deck extension offer an easy way to build a premium tier without adding another full unit.

The Bottom Line

Every CabinPro model is built to the same standard: RVIA-sealed, ANSI A119.5 compliant, energy-efficient, and designed—inside and out—to help your guests have an experience worth raving about. The differences between the Northwood, Cliff, Vista, and WanderHut come down to footprint, aesthetic, and the guest experience you're trying to create.
